Commonly caused by instant acceleration then deceleration force from a car accident, whiplash is a hyperextension-hyperflexion injury. Symptoms of whiplash occur due to the rapid back-and-forth jerking of the neck and head. Sometimes the jerking can cause displacement in multiple levels of your neck. If left untreated, you are likely to feel the effects of your injury for life.
Diagnosing Your Condition
Often the pain and stiffness are too great to ignore, affecting every aspect of your life. By scheduling an appointment with your Conyers chiropractor, you’re making an important step in treating your condition. We will evaluate your injury and determine an effective and appropriate treatment plan to get you back to everyday life.
The Biomechanics of Whiplash
The cervical spine is shaped like a C. In under a half second after impact, the C-shape becomes an S-shape as the lower cervical spine extends backward and the upper part jolts forward. Since they both move considerably outside their typical range of motion, there is potential for injuries to cervical spine ligaments and discs.
Even if you don’t feel immediate pain or discomfort, symptoms may develop within a 24-48 hours. Symptoms include:
- Pain and limited of range of motion of the neck
- Headaches at the base of the skull
- Shoulder pain and tenderness
- Upper back pain
- Arm pain, numbness or tingling
- Muscle spasms
Occasionally, people also experience blurred vision, difficulty concentrating or impaired memory. Most whiplash injuries will not heal without treatment.
If you have recently been in an accident and are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your Conyers chiropractor at AICA Conyers right away for an evaluation. The sooner you seek treatment, the sooner we can develop and implement a plan specifically for your condition and, the faster you’ll feel relief.
